I offered to rotate out repeatedly, saying a medium or heavy was better fitted for the map.

Thinking over the Q Carpopotams made, i think that he's perfectly correct in stating the obvious. Do not even appear on the lineup if you think your presence will lower the % rng of a win. Looking closely at the ratings i gave myself i can easily do a categorization: the more the map functions as a funnel or a corridor the less efective a scout will be. the more open ended the map is the % rng increases that the scout will be able to give good spots for the rest of the team.
There's also the consideration that a Scout is the natural extension of SPG's and TD's. if the team is fielding a monothematic lineup, the potential damage aid will be significantly reduced.
Paragraph 1 is overriden if team caller demands scout to be present at lineup. Scout will try its best to comply with the caller's objectives and orders.
None of this should be construed as criticism to others. It is mainly a description of my strenghts and weaknesses. I have stated before i'm a lower than average medium player and a blatant tomato in heavies. luckily for all i have eliminated any traces of those two categories from my garage (perhaps i will field a t54 in the near future though, maybe after the 13-90?).
As an aside, i'm having a grand time and enjoying the RU 251 to the max: it is nimble, it's ROF is mindblowing for a player used to the sluggish reload times and high dispersion rates of the russian line.
at this point, another list of my favorite scouts in the lineup i have available:
RU251 t15 Lttb ELC Bis T54lwt
And the list of future scouts (top ones first):
13 90 Bulldog T-49 T-71

Indeed the obj140 surpasses the T-54lwt in spotting ability (565m vs. 550) and camo value when maxxed out for scouting (29.15 vs. 28.96). The speed differential advantage of the t-54 would be the only consideeration in its favor. The choice between these 2 would very much depend on the map but it would tip the balance towards the 140 in most cases. That said, i will add it to the top of my wish list once clan war landings start in earnest. For my own specific and mediocre -at best- set of skills handling mediums, the tank is expensive to repair so i would not be running it in pug matches; it is a money loser in my record, not blaming the tank, blaming my own bias in using it. If you examine the stats, adding damage caused and damage aid to allies, it carries its own weight favorably... But compared to something else... it pales.
